World-Famous Hungarian Pianist András Schiff Performs at Strathmore, Opens U.S. Tour

The Washington Performing Arts Society (WPAS) presented Hungarian-born concert pianist András Schiff at Strathmore Hall. The concert was part of WPAS’ Piano Masters Series in which they have hosted Mr. Schiff before. He played Beethoven’s Sonatas No. 16, 17 (The Tempest), 18 (The Hunt) and 21 (Walstein).

At the invitation of WPAS President Neale Pearl, the wife of the Hungarian Ambassador, Mrs. Andrea Bors Somogyi, and several of the Embassy’s diplomats attended the performance.

András Schiff was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953, and started piano lessons at age 5. He pursued his subsequent musical studies at the Franz Liszt Academy with Pál Kadosa and György Kurtág, and in London with George Malcolm. In the 2007-2008 season, he was pianist in residence of the Berlin Philharmonic. Mr. Schiff became a British citizen in 2001. He resides in Florence and London. András Schiff has opened his series of performances at Carnegie Hall in New York on October 28, 2008, to complete the Beethoven cycle that he began in 2007–2008.
